DigiPen Institute of Technology is a leading education, digital media and interactive computer technologies research institution.

Founded in 1988 in Vancouver, Canada, and initially especialised in education in the 2D, 3D, programming, design and animation areas, the idea developed up to the teaching of the world’s first university degree in videogame programming. By the end of the decade, the company opened the Washington campus (US), continuing its international expansion towards the East opening the Singapore premises and, finally, in year 2000, in Europe, inaugurating the Bilbao Bizkaia headquarters.

Digipen has a solid career in the field of videogames industry; the teaching staff includes prominent professionals from world-renowned companies, such as Nintendo, Microsoft and Disney. Furthermore, Digipen has been the most awarded University in the Independent Games Festival; the videogames developed by its students also have won prizes in the PAX 10, IndieCade, Slamdance Guerilla Gamemaker Competition, the Indie Challenge and the Bilbao Fun&Serious Games Festival. It is a genuine source of skilled professionals for leading companies in the digital sector, such as Valve, Bungee, Blizzard, Microsoft o Nintendo.

Digipen Europe-Bilbao offers two degrees, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Art and Animation, in the modern campus of Bizkaia, which is equipped with all the necessary tools and resources for the creation of simulation and 3D animation projects.

Students are trained in all aspects related to development, programming, and videogame design. They get in touch with the creation of videogames, 3D rendering, physics, artificial intelligence and networking used in videogames. According to Jazno Francoeur, one of the Bilbao campus teachers, “we are not teaching them to be technicians, but to be the innovative industry leaders of the future”.
